Hashtag Leadership

This little beauty has a new level of power and influence:

I know, it's not much to look at but it's redefining our culture and it's becoming a powerful leadership tool.  You can find the hashtag (The number sign with a word or words following it with no spaces) on Twitter.com.  The hashtag is a topic that people want to talk about and if enough people are talking about this topic in a small amount of time it becomes listed as a trending topic on a user's Twitter homepage.

I think the hashtag creates inclusiveness and unity.  For example, I disciple high school guys all the time, it's part of my job.  This past weekend we were discussing how they can partner together to hold each other accountable to set aside time for spiritual growth.  What did we come up with?  They decided to use a hashtag of course!  They created their own secret hashtag that wouldn't be "showing off" to their peers but they use it to say, "This is important to me and I am doing it now."  So just before they start this time they get on Twitter mentioning one another in their tweet and then put the hashtag!  I think it's brilliant!

How could you be using the hashtag to lead?  Is your team partnering on a project or trying to make a dream into a reality?  Is there a core value you wish your team would think of more as they work?  Is there a event coming up that your want your team to be excited about?  Have you made a mistake in front of your team that you all can laugh about together?

All these things could be hashtags to unify your team and connect them to one another around a common purpose!

How have you seen a hashtag used in leadership?
