How to make your Labor Day feel meaningful

Labor Day is an American federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September (September 3 in 2012) that celebrates the economic and social contributions of workers.

Say's Wikipedia.

Here's what can screw up Labor Day: Hating your work.  When you hate your work you don't celebrate your contribution to anything.  Instead, you're counting down the hours until the next day of work gets to suck the life out of you.  Then you end up like this guy!

If you feel this way I encourage you to have a conversation with yourself or with trusted friends.  The conversation centers around this question: "What is my vocation?"  Some people use a different word than vocation, they use calling.

What were you made to do?  What makes your heartbeat faster when you think about getting to do __________________?  Now, a vocation and a job are two different things.  A vocation is a lifestyle. A vocation is centered around the core principals that make up who you are, it's what you were made to do.  A job, on the other hand, is work one does for financial gain.

For some people our vocation and job line up but that doesn't always have to be the case.  However, when your vocation and your job have a similar direction the work you do can be more fulfilling.  Recently I was with some of my peers and one of them asked me, "You have a full time job, you coach high school football, you own a business, and you blog...how do you have time for all that?  The question didn't feel like it was intended for me because I hadn't thought about it that way.  The more I thought of it in those terms I became stressed. I wasn't stressed before?  I was just doing what I felt needed to be done because of my vocation.

How does your work make you feel?

Here are a few questions to ask yourself this Labor Day:

1.  What is my vocation?

2.  How does my job line up with my vocation?

3.  Am I proud of my work?  If the answer is no, why not?

4.   What future am I painting today?  What things am I doing now to help me live out my vocation tomorrow?

I hope you have a great Labor Day and an even better work day on Tuesday!
